NEW! The College Classroom On-line
Co-instructor for on-line Fall 2008 course. An emphasis on a learning-centered classroom provides participants with a perspective that highlights the interconnected cycle of teaching, assessment, and learning. The course is designed around the concept of teaching-as-research (TAR).

NEW! Bio-Engineering
Develop new interdisciplinary course, assessment plan and appropriate assessment tools to establish how well students can identify the unique synergies and pitfalls that exist between biology and engineering.

Plant Biology 152
Develop new instructional materials in Plant Biology and Physiology for undergraduate and high-school education, using Arabidopsis thaliana mutants. Develop materials in Summer 2008 and tests them in the classroom during the fall semester.

Microbial Gene & Cellular Regulation
Gain meaningful teaching experience in a course (Bact/Biochem 726) that engages students in active learning. Participate in updating the course curriculum; present a subset of course lectures; guide class discussion; coach and evaluate student presentations and writing skills; maintain the course web site.

Organic Chemistry
Help make a large lecture course more interactive by drawing on pilot changes done in a small class format. Organic chemistry is a notorious subject; help make it a richer learning experience for all.   [download flyer]

Biophysical Chemisty
Work with Prof. Cavagnero to develop materials for Chem 565/665 to help students grasp abstract p-chem concepts by practical eye-pleasing demos with high information content.

Work with Prof. Diener, a biology instructor at Edgewood and the Outreach Coordinator for the Boys and Girls Club. Develop science activities related to your own research to share with children.

Informal Science Education – Mentor undergraduates
“Muir Woods Mentors: Involving Children and the Community in the Outdoor World” is an after-school project for underprivileged students from Lincoln Elementary School.

Office for Equity and Diversity Graduate Assistant Equity Workshops (GAEWs)
Revise and improve training materials and workshop evaluations.  Collaborate with presenters and present and/or facilitate workshop.

"Green" Housing Project for Native American Communities
Work with Prof. Thering and the Community Design Action Research Group - an interdisciplinary group of faculty with expertise in botany, geography, sociology, & political science.

UW-Milwaukee: Lead Instructor for a Non-Majors Biology Course
Work with a team of faculty, staff, and student to change the way a large freshmen course is taught.

UW-Marathon County Botany and Ecology
Work with Prof. Whitaker to increase the number of inquiry-based laboratory exercises, and evaluate materials and their effectiveness. Much of the work could be done at a distance with only occasional visits to the campus for implementation and evaluation.

Informal Science Education - Develop materials
Help design and create display materials for the Sonderegger Interactive Science Education and Exhibit Center.  Topics include: deep time, the ice age, native human habitation and current science and active research on campus.

Capturing Innovative Teaching Practices
Collect video clips of best teaching practices and assist Amy Schiebel in the creation of professional development material for college instructors at Edgewood. The materials will also be used for instruction in an undergraduate teaching methods course.

- Develop “Augmented reality” experiential learning materials.
- Science in-service workshops for teacher professional development.
- Develop assessment tools and continuation of on-going assessment process.

Curriculum Development - Laboratory
Work with faculty to develop a basic laboratory skills course to include a variety of techniques and practices, including animal care.
