Brownbag series:
Teaching Adventures and Outcomes

Please join us for the second presentation in the collaborative Teaching Adventures and Outcomes Forum:

Date: Friday, October 10, 2008 - 12 to 1pm

Location: 2180 Mechanical Engineering

"Introductory Engineering in the Context of Society's Grand Challenges:
Engaging and Retaining Freshmen in Engineering"

Speaker: Professor Susan Hagness
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (University of Wisconsin, Madison)

This presentation will review a new course which introduces first-year students to the role of engineering in tackling pressing problems facing society.  By taking the focus off solving mathematical problems and technical gadgets while emphasizing broad humanitarian applications of engineering, this course shows first year students the positive impact engineers can make in the world.  This context is intended to help first-year pre-engineering and undecided students make career decisions, motivate and inspire them by providing real world context, and retain students who might not otherwise stay in engineering.

Teaching Adventures and Outcomes is a monthly forum for sharing the experience and results of efforts in teaching and learning among faculty, staff, postdocs, and graduate students. This forum is a collaborative effort of Academic Technologies, CALS Council on Teaching and Learning, Center for Biology Education, Delta Program in Research, Teaching and Learning, UW Teaching Academy and the Wisconsin Program for Scientific Teaching.

The Brownbag series is a monthly forum for sharing the experience and results of instructional materials development among STEM faculty/staff, postdocs, and graduate students.
