Course Description: Consider the complex issues of diversity and
how to address them effectively in your courses. Current graduate students and faculty are recognizing that we must consider that the way we teach differentially impacts the success of all our students. This course is designed for graduate students who have an interest in becoming better college instructors, and in advancing diversity issues in their future classroom practice. Participants in this course will take a critical yet practical look at how we define diversity and for what purposes, and discuss the ways different definitions of diversity might influence what and how we teach our disciplinary topics.

Course Overview
Part 1: Focuses on foundational knowledge on the topic of diversity, research on bias, literature on ways of knowing, ways of learning and ways to address diversity in our own teaching of science
Part 2: Applies this knowledge to an individual diversity-focused project. (Prerequisite: first seven week session) Work on developing projects appropriate for inclusion in a portfolio of teaching work (particularly a Delta Certificate Portfolio), such as:
- instructional materials
- course proposals or syllabi
- grant proposals
- the diversity focus of a Delta internship proposal
Note: Although the description
is focused around teaching in the college classroom, those participants
interested in incorporating considerations of diversity into informal
education situations will also find the course interesting and useful.
